Microsoft has released a firmware update for the Surface Laptop Ultra on October 22 to address several problems users have seen since launch, including screen flickering, unexpected restarts and slow reboot times. The company says the update also includes additional bug fixes and general performance improvements.

What the update changes

According to Microsoft, the new firmware is aimed at the most visible issues people reported with the Surface Laptop Ultra. Those include display flickering, surprise restarts and reboot delays. Microsoft did not spell out every fix in the release, but said the package also brings unspecified bug fixes and broader performance improvements.

  • Screen flickering
  • Unexpected restarts
  • Lengthy reboot times
  • Additional bug fixes
  • General performance improvements

Why the update matters

The Surface Laptop Ultra had already been showing some of these problems at launch, according to reporting from The Verge. Jess Weatherbed noted that Tom Warren, who reviewed the device, saw slow reboots and display artifacts when windows were moved quickly. He also encountered speaker interference that went away after a reboot.

For everyday users, that means the update may help smooth out annoyances that can make a premium laptop feel unreliable. Problems such as flickering screens or repeated restarts can interrupt work, while long reboot times can make troubleshooting more frustrating.

What Surface Laptop Ultra owners should do

Microsoft says the firmware will reach all Surface Laptop Ultra devices, but the rollout will happen gradually, so not everyone will get it at the same time. Users who do not want to wait can install it manually through Microsoft’s driver and firmware page.

After the update is installed, Microsoft says some users may need to restart their Surface to finish the process. The company’s instructions are to go to Start, then Power, and choose Restart. Microsoft also says the firmware cannot be removed or rolled back to an earlier version.
